About us

Essentially Ankara is a family owned business created in 2019. The logo represents the three sisters behind the brand, Bernadette, Julie and Dee. We also have invaluable input and advice from other family members too, including the matriarch of our family, our mother. We are family!

Essentially Ankara was born out a true passion for Ankara accessories.

Dee the handbag lover in the family, had been buying a number of Ankara bags and products which was notably liked by her sisters and other family members. It was then that we decided to start a business selling Ankara products ranging from accessories to homeware. We wanted to showcase the beauty of Ankara and to provide a taste of what the beautiful continent of Africa is made of, as seen through our eyes and bring that to you.

We are of West African origin and are proud to be promoting the creative talents of our suppliers, mainly from this region, who too are small businesses.

Our aim is for you to be a part of our vision, inspiring us to continue to seek out unique and quality products for you to enjoy.

You might like to know what Ankara actually is. Ankara, commonly known as African wax print and Dutch wax print is popular in west Africa . It refers to cotton prints (although also printed on other material) that are vibrant and colourful. It's actual origins are from Indonesia where handmade textiles, batik, were created using a technique of wax resistant dying. Colonised by the Dutch, who mass produced imitations of the fabric, it became popular with Africans when introduced by a Dutch entrepreneur.

We have had a great journey to date. We first started trading at a black market event, which we found exhilarating. We then started trading at African inspired pop up markets. It was a great way to meet our customers in person and to meet other wonderful small businesses selling an array of products from accessories and clothing to food and skincare.
